Lok Sabha: Introduction 

Article 81 of the Indian Constitution Defines the composition of the Lok Sabha. Lok Sabha is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of India, it is called "the House of the People". Parliament is the largest law-making assembly of India, which includes the President, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Members of the Lok Sabha act as representatives of the public.

The Union Cabinet is formed by including some members of the Lok Sabha. The Union Cabinet is a group that handles important departments and ministries of the government.

According to Article 75(3), the Cabinet is responsible to the Lok Sabha.

Ministers included in the Union Cabinet must be members of Parliament. If any minister is not a member of either House of Parliament for six consecutive months, his ministerial post automatically ceases.

According to the Constitution of India, the maximum number of members of the Lok Sabha can be 550 (earlier 550+2).

530 members will represent the States and 20 members will represent the Union Territories.

At present the total number of Lok Sabha seats is 543. Elections for these 543 Lok Sabha members are held every 5 years. 

Till 2019, there was a provision for the President to nominate two members of the Anglo-Indian community in the Lok Sabha.

Which was abolished on 25 January 2020 by the 104th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2019.

Lok Sabha Electoral System 

Members of the Lok Sabha are elected by adult universal suffrage (above 18 years of age) and a simple majority system.

Members of the Lok Sabha are directly elected by the public. The electoral system of the Lok Sabha is called the "first-past-the-post system".

The Election Commission of India is responsible for conducting Lok Sabha elections.

Lok Sabha Tenure 

The tenure of the Lok Sabha is 5 years from the date of its first meeting. The President can dissolve the Lok Sabha prematurely on the advice of the Union Council of Ministers.

Note: In 1975 the tenure of the fifth Lok Sabha was extended twice for one year each, i.e. from 5 years to 7 years. According to this, the tenure of the fifth Lok Sabha was to be from 1971 to 1978. But it was dissolved in 1977 and elections were held for the 6th Lok Sabha.

First Lok Sabha Election 

The first general elections in India were held between 25 October 1951 and 21 February 1952.

Lok Sabha came into existence on 17 April 1952. Its first meeting was held on 13 May 1952.

In the first general election, the Indian National Congress won 364 out of 489 seats and received 45% of the total votes. Thus Congress won as the largest party and Jawahar Lal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India.

84 seats have been reserved in the Lok Sabha for Scheduled Castes and 47 seats for Scheduled Tribes, which is about 24% of the total seats.
The maximum number of seats in the Lok Sabha for Scheduled Castes have been reserved in the state of Uttar Pradesh, which is 17.
The maximum number of seats in the Lok Sabha for Scheduled Tribes has been reserved in the state of Madhya Pradesh, which is 6.
