1. Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. The height of Mount Everest is  8,848.86 m. The height of Mount Everest in feet is 29,031.7 ft. It is located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. Before Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga was considered the highest peak in the world. Mount Everest lies on the border between Nepal and the Tibet, Autonomous Region of China.

Mount Everest was previously known as Peak XV by the British, but it was renamed after a former Surveyor General of India, George Everest in the nineteenth century. 

The Tibetan name of Mount Everest is Chomolungma, which means “Mother Goddess of the World.” The Nepali name of Mount Everest is Sagarmatha, which means “Goddess of the Sky.” The cost to climb Mount Everest is about $45,000.00 (in India Rupees 32,000,00). 

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay (Tibetan guide) were the first people to climb Mount Everest in 1953. They used the southeastern ridge route.

Junko Tabei (Japanese mountaineer) was the first lady to climb Mount Everest on May 16, 1975

Jordan Romero (13 years, 10 months, 10 days old), from California, was the youngest person to climb Mount Everest on May 22, 2010.

Malavath Poorna (13 years and 11 months old), from India, was the youngest girl to climb Mount Everest on May 25, 2014.

Kami Rita Sherpa, from Nepal, holds the record for climbing Mount Everest the most times. She has climbed Mount Everest 24 times till May 20, 2019.

Avtar Singh Cheema was the first indian to climb Mount Everest in 1965.

Bachendri Pal was the first indian woman to reach the summit of mount everest in 1984. (She was awarded the third highest civilian award Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2019.)

Santosh Yadav is the first woman to climb Mount Everest twice (in 1992 and 1993) in the world.

The fatality rate is about 6.5% of climbers, who attempt to climb the summit.

2.  Mount K2 (Godwin Austen)

Mount K2 is the 2nd highest mountain in the world. The height of Mount K2 is 8,848 m (29,029 ft). Mount K2 is located in the northwestern Karakoram Range. 

It lies on the China–Pakistan border between Baltistan (Pakistan) and Xinjiang (China).

The mountain was discovered in 1856 by Colonel Thomas Montgomerie. This mountain was given the symbol K2 by Thomas Montgomerie because it was the second peak measured in the Karakoram Range. Mount K2 is locally known as Chhogori.

Henry Godwin Austen was the first surveyor of this peak so it is also given the name of Godwin Austen. Mount K2 is known as the savage Mount as an American climber George Bell told the reporters “It’s a savage Mount that tries to kill you.”  Some other names of Mount K2 are “The King of Mountains” and “The Mountaineers' Mountain.” 

Mount K2 is considered more difficult and dangerous than Mount Everest. This is the only mountain that has never been climbed during the winter season nor has it ever attempted to climb from its eastern face. Ascent has almost tried to climb it in the months of July and August. The warmest times of the year make it easy to climb it. 

The two Italian climbers Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli were the first people to reach the summit of k2 in July 1954 (In Italian Karakoram expedition led by Ardito Desio).

Wanda Rutkiewicz (Polish Mountaineer) was the first woman to reach the summit of K2. She was also the third woman to climb Mount Everest.

3. Mount Kanchenjunga

Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world. The height of Kanchenjunga is about 8,586 m (28,169 ft). It is located in the eastern Himalayas. It lies on the border between Nepal and Sikkim (India).

Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world,

But after 1856 it was officially announced that Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest and Mount K2

Kanchenjunga was first climbed by Joe Brown and George Band on 25 May 1955 under the British expedition. 

Mount Kanchenjunga is also known as the “Five Treasures of Snow”.

Ginette Harrison was the first woman to climb Kangchenjunga in 1998.

Mount Lhotse is located on the border of Khumbu region of Nepal and the Tibet of China.

Mount Lhotse is connected to Mount Everest via the South Col. The meaning of Lhotse in Tibetan is "South Peak". 

The main summit of Lhotse was first climbed on 18 May 1956 by the swiss team of Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger.

Chantal Mauduit became the first woman to reach the summit of Lhotse in 1996.

Arjun Vajpai became the youngest climber to summit Lhotse in May 2011 at the age of 17 years, 11 months and 16 days. He is an Indian mountaineer.

5. Mount Makalu

Mount Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. The height of Mount Makalu is about 8481 m (27825 ft). It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 20 km southeast of Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet, Autonomous region of China.

Mount Makalu was first climbed by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition led by Jean Franco on May 15, 1955.

Kitty Calhoun was the first woman to climb Mount Makalu in 1990 via the West Pillar route.

6. Cho Oyu Mountain

Cho Oyu mountain is the sixth highest mountain in the world. The height of Cho Oyu mountain is about 8,188 metres (26,864 ft). It lies between the Nepal - China border. This mountain is located 20 km west of Mount Everest. 

Mount Cho Oyu is considered the easiest 8000 m peak to climb.

Mount Cho Oyu was first climbed by Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama on October 19, 1954, via the north-west ridge of an Austrian expedition.

This mountain is the second highest climbing mountain after Mount Everest with a height of 8000m. 

In Tibetan language, Cho Oyu means “Goddess of blue colour”.

This mountain was first climbed by swiss/Australian/Nepali expedition on 13 May 1960 under the leadership of Max Islelin. The Dhaulagiri name comes from Sanskrit where Dhawala means Shiny, White, Beautiful and Giri means Mountain. 

Dhaulagiri is the highest mountain within the borders of a single country (Nepal). Dhaulagiri was considered the highest mountain until 1838 when Kanchenjunga took its place, followed by Mount Everest in 1858.

The name Manaslu comes from the sanskrit word ‘Manasa’ and the means of this word is ‘Intellect or soul’ and Manaslu means “Mountains of the spirit.”

It is also called the ‘killer mountain’ by locals because 53 mountaineers had lost their life in this mountain between 1956 to 2006. Mount Manaslu is in the Mansiri Himal which is part of the Nepalese Himalayas. 

It was first climbed by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norba (who are members of Japanese expedition) on May 9, 1956.

Mount Manaslu is about 64 km east of Annapurna Mountain.

Mount Manaslu is the 4th Most dangerous 8000 m peak to climb, behind Annapurna, Nanga Parbat, and K2.

9. Nanga Parbat

Nanga Parbat is the Ninth highest mountain in the world. The height of Nanga Parbat is about 8126 m (26660 ft). 

This mountain is also known as the name “Diamer or Deomir”, in Tibetan name, which means “Huge Mountain”. Nanga Parbat lies in the Pakistan controlled Gilgit-Balistan region, which India also considered its part. 

Nanga Parbat is known as a killer mountain because of its difficult climb and its high number of climber fatalities.

It was first climbed by an Australian climber, Hermann Buhl on July 3, 1953. He was a member of a German-Austrian team, led by Peter Aschenbrenner. 

The name “Nanga Parbat” is derived from the Sanskrit word, “Nagna and Parvata”, meaning “Naked Mountain”.

10. Annapurna Mountain

Annapurna Mountain is the tenth highest mountain in the world. The height of the Annapurna Mountain is about 8091 m (26545 ft)

It is located in the Himalayas in north central Nepal. It was first climbed by french mountaineer Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal on 3 June 1950. 

This mountain is very difficult to climb. In terms of risk, it is the most dangerous mountain in the world.

The death rate during this climb is about forty percent compared to successful climbs (Death rate of Mount K2 is about 26.5% and Mount Everest is about 3.87%). 

The Gandaki gorge separates Annapurna Mountain from Dhaulagiri Mountain.

The Annapurna massif contains four main summits - Annapurna I (8091 m, 26545 ft stands in western ends of the range), and Annapurna II (7937 m, 26040 ft stands at the eastern ends of the range). Annapurna III (7555 m, 24786 ft), and Annapurna IV (7525 m, 24688 ft) lie between them.
