Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organization under the Government of India to recruit staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) carries out the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL, 10+2) Exam to recruit persons at various posts like - Postal Assistants/Sorting Assistants(PA/SA), Data Entry Operator (DEO), Lower Divisional Clerk (LDC), Court Clerk. Selection Process for SSC CHSL:

  • SSC CHSL Tier 1 – Computer Based Written Examination
  • SSC CHSL Tier 2 – Descriptive Test
  • SSC CHSL Tier 3 – Skill Test / Typing Test for the posts of DEO, PA/SA, LDC, and Court Clerk

Exam Pattern for SSC CHSL:

SSC CHSL Tier I Exam Pattern:

The question paper will comprise 4 sections:

  • Section 1- General Intelligence

  • Section 2 -English Language

  • Section 3- Quantitative Aptitude

  • Section 4- General Awareness/General Knowledge.

  • Mode of Exam: Objective Type (Computer Based Test)

  • Total No of questions: Tier 1 Exam will have 100 questions 

  • Total marks: 200 marks.

  • Duration of the exam: 60 Minutes

  • Language of Paper: The question paper will be set in both English and Hindi for every section except the English Language section.

  • Marking Scheme: Negative marking of 0.50 marks will be applicable in the exam.

SSC CHSL Tier-II ( Descriptive Test ) Exam Pattern :

  • Mode of Exam: Tier 2 will be a descriptive exam to be conducted in offline (pen & paper-based) mode.

  • Type of Paper: Candidates will be asked to write essays/ letters/applications on any topic.

  • Total Marks: The exam will be of 100 marks 

  • Duration of Exam: 60 minutes.

  • Language of Exam: The exam must be written in either Hindi or English.

  • This written test comprises an Essay of 200-250 words and Letter/Application writing of about 150-200 words.
  • The minimum marks that a candidate needs to score in SSC CHSL Tier-II are 33 percent.
  • The total time duration is 80 minutes for candidates who are visually handicapped or suffer from cerebral palsy.

SSC CHSL Tier-III Exam Pattern:

The Tier III of SSC CHSL will be a Skill Test/Typing Test which would be of qualifying nature. The final merit of the successful candidate would be determined on the basis of the total score obtained by them in Tier-I and Tier-II.

SSC CHSL Syllabus: Tier II

SSC CHSL Tier-II exam is a descriptive paper of 100 marks conducted in offline mode only for the candidates who qualified Tier I. There is no negative marking for wrong attempts in the SSC CHSL Tier-II Exam.

The paper will have to be written either in Hindi or in English. Candidates must secure a minimum of 33% marks in order to clear the Tier II round of the SSC CHSL Exam.

SSC CHSL Syllabus: Tier III

The syllabus for the SSC CHSL Tier – III exam will be a skill/typing test. Tier-III of SSC CHSL will be a Skill/ Typing Test of qualifying nature. The final merit of the selected candidates will be based on the basis of the total score obtained in Tier-I and Tier-II.

Data Entry Speed of 8000 key depressions per hour on the computer will be determined on the basis of the correct entry of words/key depressions as per the given passage.

The duration of the test will be for 15 minutes and printed matter in English containing about 2000-2200 key-depressions would be given to the candidates to enter the same in the test computer.

Data Entry Operator in the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG)

The speed of 15000 key depressions per hour will be determined on the basis of the correct entry of words/key depressions as per the given passage.

The duration of the test will be 15 minutes and printed matter in English containing about 3700-4000 key-depressions would be given to the candidates to enter the same in the test computer.

Lower Division Clerk/ Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDS/JSA) and Postal Assistants/ Sorting Assistants (PA/SA)

The speed of 10500 key depressions per hour will be determined on the basis of the correct entry of words/key depressions as per the given passage.

The duration of the test will be 15 minutes and printed matter in English containing about 9000 key-depressions/hour would be given to the candidates to enter the same in the test computer.
