All States and Capital of India: Our India is a vast country located in South Asia. Its total area is 3,287,263 sq km, and its estimated population is 135.26 crore (2019).

The present form of India that we see today, came into existence on 15 August 1947. Earlier India was divided into many small princely states. The present Indian states have been formed by merging these small princely states.

Our country India is a democratic republic which means that the government is elected by the people, which has a process.

The representatives elected by the people run the administration according to the rules written in the "Constitution". 

The Constitution of India is the supreme law of India which was passed by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950.

26 November is celebrated as ‘Constitution Day’ in India while 26 January is celebrated as ‘Republic Day’.

India is a federal constitutional republic in which there are 28 states and 8 union territories. In today's article, we are going to give you information about these 28 states and 8 union territories.

As we told you above that before coming into the present form, India was divided into many small princely states. The present Indian princely states have been formed by merging these small princely states.

At present, there are 28 states in India, but how did they come into existence, let us first know about it.

States Reorganization Act

On 22 December 1953, the first State Reorganization Commission was constituted under the chairmanship of Justice Fazal Ali. The commission had three members- Justices Fazal Ali, Hridaynath Kunzru, and KM Panikkar. This commission submitted its report on 30 December 1955.

After some improvement in this, the States Reorganization Act was passed by the Parliament in 1956. Under this, 14 states and 6 union territories came into existence.

The second phase of state reorganization began in 1960.

  • In 1960, the state of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed by bifurcation Bombay state.
  • Nagaland was formed in 1963.
  • Punjab was reorganized in 1966 to form Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
  • The states of Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura were formed in 1972.
  • Mizoram was formed in 1987.
  • In 1987, the Union Territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Goa were given full statehood.
  • The states of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh came into existence in the year 2000.
  • The state of Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh, the state of Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar, and the state of Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh.
  • On June 2, 2014, Telangana was carved out of the state of Andhra Pradesh to form the 29th state.

Note: JBP Commission (Jawahar Lal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, Pattabhi Sitaramayya) suggested the formation of states on a linguistic basis. As a result of which ‘Andhra Pradesh was the first state to be formed on linguistic (Telugu speaking state) basis in 1953’.

How Many States are in India?

The total number of states in India since 2019 was 29 as Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh state on 2 June 2014 to form the 29th state of India.

August 5, 2019, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act was introduced in the Parliament by Home Minister Amit Shah, which was passed by the Parliament. President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to it on 9 August 2019.

In this act a provision was made to reorganize the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories (1) Jammu and Kashmir (2) Ladakh. The provisions of this Act came into force on 31 October 2019.

By this act Article 370 and 35A were abolished in Jammu and Kashmir which gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Union Territories of India

Till the year 2019, there were 7 union territories in India, but on 31 October 2019, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two union territories (1) Jammu and Kashmir (2) Ladakh.

Thus, before the year 2020, there were 9 union territories in India. But by the law passed by the Government of India on 26 January 2020, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged to form a single union territory. Dadra and Nagar Haveli And Daman and Diu is a union territory located in western India.
